Hayama Town 100th Anniversary Project × NAPONDAF
“Boyaki of 〇〇 vol.1 in Hayama”
A physical exploration of the silent complaints whispered by everyday objects rooted in a specific place.
Participated as a choreographer and dancer in “○○ no Boyaki”
vol.1 in Hayama, a project
organized by “Napondafu” (led by Minori Kodama and Keito Fukuhara), selected as part of the
Hayama Town 100th Anniversary Commemorative Program.
The performance integrated storytelling and dance, rooted in the local community.
Set in Hayama, Kanagawa—the hometown of one of the organizers, Kodama—this outdoor performance was developed from the idea of expressing, through theater and dance, the “grumbles” or “murmurs” of three symbolic local objects: the “Genbei” flip-flops, the concrete blocks of the seawall, and the torii gate on Najima Island—capturing the world as seen from their perspectives.
Before the main creation phase, the project included a three-day research residency in
September, in which I also participated.
During the residency, we conducted interviews with local residents—asking about what they
love about Hayama and their stories related to the three motif objects—and observed the
actual sites and materials for research.
On the final day, we gathered at the Isshiki Kaikan Hall within Moriyama Shrine, the actual performance venue, where we created “self-introductions” from the perspective of the objects and explored movement inspired by the landscapes seen through their eyes, exchanging ideas for the performance.
A record of this project was also featured on the website of Zushi Hayama Keizai Shimbun.
After returning to Tokyo, the team continued the creative process for about two months under the direction and composition of co-organizer and director Keito Fukuhara, before finally bringing the piece to the stage.
In addition to the creation of the work itself, members—many of whom, like the organizers Minori Kodama and Keito Fukuhara, are alumni of Nihon University College of Art—handled all aspects of the project, from local outreach and inviting local food and craft vendors, to outdoor stage setup and performance management on the day of the event.
The performers included fellow graduates from Nihon University as well as actors connected to Kodama through previous stage work, and dancers who had collaborated with choreographer Rina Kato in the past.
Many local residents and visitors from other regions attended on the day, enjoying both the outdoor performances and the various vendor booths.
Together with Kodama and Fukuhara, I hoped this project would offer an opportunity to imagine the world through the eyes of the familiar “objects” rooted in our community, and to reflect on our sense of hometown and belonging.
