Participation in the 66th Akabane Baka Festival Parade
We participated in the “Baka Matsuri” Parade, one of the largest and most traditional local events in Tokyo’s Kita Ward, providing an opportunity for local residents to experience contemporary dance up close in a familiar community setting.
The costume parade, open for entry to anyone from the Johoku area, features not only local dance circles but also participants from diverse backgrounds—such as hospital workers, members of the Self-Defense Forces, and bankers—who come together through a shared “Baka Odori” dance phrase. The event serves as a vibrant space for community engagement and connection through dance.
Our team of dancers joined the parade using contemporary dance as our expressive tool, creatively reinterpreting the traditional “Baka Odori” movements to fit within our own choreographic language.

It was a valuable opportunity to co-choreograph and structure a performance for a parade watched over by people of all ages—from children to the elderly—and to explore dance as a means of connecting directly with the local community.
